Flip Flops

Flip Flops

Material:

  • An old Jean,
  • Material,
  • Cardboard
  • Fleece,
  • Foam rubber or any soft and thicker material.
  • Tools: glue, scissors needle and thread and, if possible, a sewing machine.

Flip Flops

First you transfer the shape of a flip-flop to the board or cut out the template below.

Transfer the cardboard templet to another material (you can use the same material as you use for the outside). Then cut it out.

Flip Flops

Once again transfer the cardboard template to the fleece or any other soft and thicker material of your choice, then cut it out.

Both materials are glued to the cardboard, with the softer side up. You only need a standard liquid adhesive. Better, however, if you use Patex.

Now you have the piece of cardboard for the sole, one layer of material for stability and one soft layer for comfort. If everything sticks together firmly, you can proceed.

Now transfer the template for the flip-flops another 4 times to the jeans material and cut it out. However, you need to cut it out 2cm bigger than the template. If you want to saw it with the machine, give it 4cm.

Now sew half a centimetre outside the black line. Always sew two layers of denim together. Be careful, so that you still can push the board with the fabric into in. You can you sew by hand or by machine.

Flip Flops

Repeat that a second time. Then you put the cardboard with the material in the resulting “bag” and sew up the rest. Make sure the fabric is stitched together so that the margin between fabric and cardboard is not too big. However, make sure it not too tense either.

Flip Flops

From the remaining jeans cut off the hem. Best use the material from the legs down because it is not as thick and you can sew it more easily.

Mark the spot which supports the toes.

Now sew the hem to the middle. Most likely you have to do that by hand because your flip flops are already very thick. You should also use a thicker thread; even that might be a little harder to sew.

The person wearing the flip flops later on has to stand on the soles. Thread the hem through the toes and secure it in the right lengths on both sides of the flip-flops. Get out of you flip- flops again and sew on the hem. I could manage quite well with the machine. All that is left to do is cutting off the edges and you are done with your new flip-flops.

Of course you can use all sorts of materials, maybe paint the fabric or sew something on to make it look like patchwork.
