Cushions and table cloths

Simple weaves using coloured ribbons make an impressive effect.

Material:

  • A bucket or
  • A washing up bowl for the paint bath
  • Rubber gloves
  • Water colours
  • Fixer
  • Salt
  • Iron-on interlining

This pattern is made with a dark, a medium and a light colour. When they are woven together they give the impression of a three-dimensional checker board. The horizontal and vertical strips produced in the normal way. A third strip is pulled through them diagonally. Use the medium and dark fabrics to cut ribbons for the vertical and horizontal strips in the required width and length. You also need ain interlining fabric in the same quantity as the vertical and horizontal strips.

The horizontal and vertical strips as well as the interlining fabric shown here are 35cm long. In order to pull through the diagonal strips you will need to attach a needle to one end of the strip.

How to do it:

  1. Mark out a little seam on the interlining. Attach the interlining with the sticky side facing upwards to a board.

  2. Attach the horizontal strips (medium colour) at the top end of the interlining. Make sure that the materials lie edge to edge and do not overlap.

  3. Weave the vertical strips (dark colour) as follows: Row one over once, under once, over twice and under once. Repeat this until you reach the end. Row two: under once and through, over twice, under once and over twice. Repeat this until the end. Row three: over twice, under once, over twice and under once. Repeat until you reach the end. Repeat this sequence for all vertical and horizontal strips.

  4. Use lightly coloured ribbon for the diagonal ends. Weave diagonally from the top end to the bottom. Lead the ribbon over two weave strips (dark) and then under two horizontal strips (medium). Repeat this sequence until you reach the left bottom hand corner (compare the left hand picture).

  5. Pull the ribbon over the last horizontal strip and stick it to the interlining. Stick it down firmly and check whether the weave is straight and fixed in place. Stick down the other side and trim off the excess materials.

  6. Check once again whether the weave is smooth. Melt the ribbons onto the interlining by using a dry medium heat iron. In order to add more dimension, use a second light colour for the diagonal.
