When hiking for several days keeping yourself clean and brushing your teeth, is a special task. More often than not, you won’t find any showers, often not even a sink. Usually, you will find places to clean yourself somewhere on your way. This can be a well, a creek, a water tab, or sometimes you might ask a garden owner if you could borrow the hose for a shower. Brushing your teeth, you can also do at a creek or a lake. However, most likely you will find somewhere drinking water. If nothing else is available, you can always buy a bottle of water.

However, thinking back to our Easter camps, more often than not, by those sub-zero temperatures (Germany) the water for washing and brushing the teeth was frozen too. This is easy solved at the camp fire. Especially for kids with braces brushing your teeth is very important.

And once you are 10 to 20 days on the road washing and brushing your teeth becomes a necessity. This can be great fun, even in the suburbs. We always found a well or a public place where we could shower. Alternatively, we planned a trip to the local pool and used the showers there.

In my early days, when I organised my first holiday camps, we organised with farmers to transport jerry cans to provide water for 60 – 70 people. Our hair we always washed in the river. However, you could not do the same today because there are too many regulations. Just recently I talked to a youth worker. He told me, spontaneously camping is hardly possible today. There have to be showers with hot and cold water and biodegradable toilets as well.
