Once the lawn is dry enough after the winter, once again, kids can romp around, there are some nice games which can be played on the lawn.

If you prepare only as few as 5 - 6 games you can fill an entire group afternoon. The following games will cover about 2 hours; give and take depending on the number of kids you have. In combination with a few ball games for the lawn, you have quite a variety and excitement.

Belly-up, the kids, must crawl over the grass backwards on all fours.

  • Crab Battle:

Belly-up and all fours on the ground, the objective for the contestants is, to knock the other party over so that they touch the grass with their butt.

  • Caterpillar Race:

A caterpillar consists of at least 3-4 children. Each child holds on to one ankle of the person in front of him. This way they have to cover a certain distance without falling apart or letting go of the ankle.

  • Stilts race on two legs:

In this relay race the runner must hold his ankles with his hands. In this manner, they start and ideally arrive the same way at the finishing line. It is important never to let go of the ankles.

  • Wheelbarrow race:

Classic wheelbarrow race as a relay race game, or alternatively, play it as a transport squadron.

  • Cartwheels:

You can organise that as a relay race. The objective is to cover a certain distance while cartwheeling across the lawn. The referee is to observe closely that the kids really make one cartwheel after the other and so not walk in between.

  • Foot dabble:

One foot has to be put exactly in front of the other. Who can cover a certain distance the fastest? Kids with a large shoe size definitely have an advantage here. But also, those who can really move their feet fast. Make sure; no one is cheating.

  • Somersault Beat (forward / reverse):

This might be difficult for some children, as somersaulting might not be part of their expertise. This game will teach them how to do it. Again, the kids have to somersault across the lawn. This can easily be carried out as a relay race. Make sure there are no gaps in between.

Team games on the lawn

  • Dragon's Tail Catching (plastic tape required):

Each child receives a plastic tape which is attached to its waistband at the back. The objective is to get somebody else’s tail without losing the own tail. Alternatively, 3 – 5 kids can form a dragon by means of holding on to the shoulders of the front man. The last in the queue gets the dragon's tail attached to his waistband. The objective for the front man is to grab the tail of another dragon. The major difficulty in the game is preventing the dragon from falling apart.

  • Rolling over:

5 -6 kids lay down, one next to the other. Then the last person starts to roll over all the players. When he comes to the other side, he lays down and is not the first person. Only then the next person can start. Who rolls the fastest across his teammates?

  • Frog leaping:

5-6 Kids form a team and line up. The last person starts to jump over all the kids in front of him. They have to bend down so that the kid can jump over their backs. Which team finishes first? It is important that there is at least a distance of 1.5m between each kid.

  • Breaking the Chain:

All kids stand next to each other and hold hands. A volunteer is needed now who will try to break through the chain. If you have enough kids, you can play the same game with two or more teams. Always one candidate has to break through the enemy line. For every success, the team scores a point. Be aware, this game can get a little rough at times.
