Clocks: The hands of a clock

Clocks: The hands of a clock

Do you recognise this? "I believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth and I believe in Jesus Christ his son and our lord… I believe in the community of the holy“

Yes, that is the confession of faith.

Each and every person must set themselves several goals in life. In order to achieve the goals we set, we are often reliant upon other people’s help. Reaching the goal by ourselves is very difficult. If we have set ourselves the target of believing in God, we do not quite manage this alone. This would not make any sense. We need friends who help us along the path of belief.

However, with reference to the confession of faith, which requirements are important so that a holy community or a community of belief works?

I would like to explain the requirement using a short example:
Every single believer represents a clock hand. If we observe the individual hands of the clock, we notice the following:

  • One is thick.
  • One is thin.
  • One is large.
  • One is small.
  • One is red.
  • One is black.
  • One runs fast.
  • One runs slowly.

In order for the clock to work, two things are required:

  • The hands must stick together in the middle, even if they do not always point in the same direction.
  • The hands must rotate in the same direction.

I hope that our believe works in this sense. If we have the same direction and our belief holds us together and connects us, then we have a community among ourselves and we can confidently say: "… I believe in the community of the holy“.
