Matchstick Rocket

This mini rocket launcher works – however should only be used outdoors.

Cut out a strip of aluminium foil and fold it in the middle. Place a matchstick in the middle- so that the head of the match stick is precisely on the middle fold line. Then lay a thin needle on top of the match stick.

Fold the aluminium foil over the match stick, press down firmly and wrap the rest of the foil completely around it. Following this the thin needle can be removed; taking care not to compress the foil at this region.

Then the match stick is put over an unfolded paper clip. Using a lighter, try and ignite the matchstick.

When the matchstick ignites, the pressure escapes through the foil and pushes the matchstick up into the air.
