Insect Block

Insects have, due to our cleanliness and orderliness, very little chance to survive and multiply in our gardens.

However, insects are not only important food for other animals but are also very useful and even ecologically vital.

Construction:

From a tree trunk, spruce, fir or any other suitable timber, cut out the basic model to the dimensions (right on the image) using a saw.

After you have cut it out, mark the holes on the front side. Each hole with 20 mm distance to the edge of the next hole. The first 3 rows are drilled with a 7mm drill, the second 3 rows with a 5mm drill and the last 2 rows are drilled with a 3 mm drill, always with a depth of 70mm.

Now, clean and sand the holes and the front of the block nicely back. Use a vacuum cleaner to get all the dust and wood chips sucked out of the holes. Then, using roofing felt, nail on the roof and attach a bit of wire as a hanger.

Location:

  • In the garden, house or on the garage wall
  • In about 150 cm height
  • On a sunny, wind and rain protected place
  • Direction south or south/east – depending on which side of the world you live
  • No drafts
