Description:

Frames (=similar trampolines, from which a ball can bounce back)With Tschouko the ‘throwing’ team receives a point if the opposing team fails to catch the rebounding ball before it touches the floor.

Game idea:

With Tschouko two teams of 9 play against each other. The game starts at the base of the pitch. The team in possession of the ball has to try after a maximum of three passes to hit the opponents frame, and so gain a point. The throwing team receives a point only if the opposing team fails to catch the rebounding ball and it touches the floor. After each point gained, the opposing team takes the ball and again, after 3 passes tries to get into a good shooting position. The special thing about Tchoukball is that the defending team is able to hamper the action or the attack. You have to focus less on defending the goal/frame and more on defence in the playing field itself.

Game procedure

The team in possession of the ball has to after a maximum of three passes, throw the ball (a hand ball or something similar) onto one of the 2 frames; this is not to be intercepted by the opposing team. Contrary to most other ball-sports, the direction of play constantly changes i.e. both teams can throw onto any of the frames. If the ball rebounds off a frame and is caught by the non-throwing team, then the ball can instantly be thrown into the same frame or the frame at the other end of the pitch. So the playing field is defended and not the goal/frames. However the three-pass rule always stands. If the ball touches the floor, the opposing team now gets the ball.

Points

The players receive a point for their team if, after rebounding from the frame the ball:

  • Touches the floor of the pitch
  • An opponent catches but then drops the ball to the floor
  • Touches a prohibited part of the opponents body (i.e. underneath the waist = prohibited)

The player gives a point to the opposing team if the ball:

  • Misses the frame
  • After rebounding, touches the floor within the shooting-circle
  • After rebounding touches the floor outside of the pitch
  • Is touched by the shooter after rebounding
  • Touches someone on the same team within the shooting circles/outside of the pitch (i.e. one point is prevented).

No points rather a free pass is given, when the ball hits the frame or the ropes of the frame. If the ball is caught by the opposing team then the game continues as normal.

The players can:

  • Move freely within the pitch
  • Play on both frames – except at the beginning of play and after a point has been won.
  • Play the ball on the head, chest, hands, fists and trunk
  • Make three floor-contacts using the feet – Caution: if the ball is caught with both hands this counts as two floor contacts (this rule can be omitted by beginners)
  • Hold the ball for three seconds
  • Move the ball from one hand to the other
  • Catch/throw the ball in any position

The players cannot:

  • prevent the opponents in any way whilst they are catching, throwing or running
  • make more than three passes within the same team
  • throw onto the same frame more than three times (own and opponents throws are combined)
  • play the ball with the feet/legs
  • dribble
  • leave the pitch with the ball
  • drop the ball
  • Intercept an opponent passing the ball.
  • Intentionally throw the ball at an opponent
  • After the ball has rebounded from the frame, take the ball back into the same team
  • Step into the shooting circle in order to defend the ball
  • Enter the shooting circle holding the ball
  • Throw the ball from the wrong side of the centre line

If the rules are broken by a team, the opposing team is given a free pass at the spot where the foul occurred.

The players, the game and the teams

  • A team consists of 15 players
  • 9 players from each team are on the pitch
  • The substitution of players takes place without interrupting the game. The new player enters the pitch as soon as the substituted player has left the pitch.
  • Substitutions only take place when a point has been scored.
  • It is prohibited for players to wear objects that could lead to injuries (watches, jewellery etc.)
  • The length of play consists of 3 x 15 minutes

Variations

  • Particularly for beginners throwing-errors shouldn’t be translated as points for the opposing team.
  • Number of players and/or pitch size can be altered.
  • All other possible rules, HOWEVER please remember: Tchoukball is renowned for not intercepting/inhibiting the opponents, and that the possession of the ball is never achieved by interception or stealing.
